The popularity of Texas Hold’em on television has greatly increased the number of poker rooms in casinos everywhere. So-called “professional wannabees” saunter into poker rooms wearing dark sunglasses and various styles of hats, looking like some of the pros they have seen on TV.
There are actually two types of poker events: day-to-day play in casinos and tournament play. There are different strategies for each.
If playing in tournaments, not only do you need skill but you need the luck of getting good hands in the relatively short term of the tournament. In day-to-day play in live poker rooms against other players, in the long run good cards will even out. In the short term, you don’t have to be the best poker player in the world . . . just be better than the other players at the table.
Most of the so-called professionals have been playing poker practically all their lives, moving from friendly games at home or even in an office to the casino games featuring daily and/or tournament play.
Fairly recently [in December, 2008, when this article was written] it had been revealed that cheating at poker on internet casinos was not uncommon. Certain “players” were able to see the cards of other players at their “table” and take advantage of that knowledge to win big money. Now that this type of behavior has been revealed, we have to assume that some action will be taken soon to stop it.
In the meantime the prohibition against internet gambling for residents of the United States continues in effect. Until that ban is lifted, it is advisable to play Texas Hold’em on the Internet for recreation and practice only, using the “play” mode instead of real money.
